Somaliland’s history is long and complex, marked by early civilizations, colonial rule, and a subsequent struggle for independence. The region, which includes the present-day Republic of Somaliland, was home to one of the earliest civilizations in the Horn of Africa and played a role in trade with ancient civilizations like Egypt. It then became a British protectorate, briefly gained independence in 1960, and later united with Italian Somaliland before ultimately declaring independence again in 1991, a move not recognized by the international community
